I’ve recently been guilty of the “do as I say, not do as I do” brigade. I help other people with stress management and weight issues amongst other things but have neglected my own weight management and stress levels, which is not helped by the menopause tyre that has appeared around my stomach! So Gary and I are embarking on an exercise regime which involves working out 5 times a week. We have decided to do this together for motivation and to make the sessions more enjoyable … and so far, it is working. We are just starting on week 2 and I feel great. It’s also really helping my dodgy back and it’s nice to spend time together. We’re not quite the Gorka Marquez and Gemma Atkinson of Basingstoke but we’re getting there!
I have a bit of a sweat on…they have just got on with their own workouts and programmes … and to my knowledge, barely known that I was there …they are probably either wondering what I’m thinking, absorbed in their own thoughts, or they don’t care. I hope that they are the latter.
The gym is full of all shapes, ages, fitness levels and sizes. I wonder why we worry so much about what other people think? It seems strange when I write that down. Does it really matter what others think, or is it a reflection of what we are thinking about ourselves? If so, then we are guilty of several thinking errors. We need to stop thinking critically about ourselves; acknowledge that there is room for improvement; recognise and celebrate any wins; and learn from those times when things don’t quite go to plan. I’m not fat, I have fat, and I can get rid of it. It’s just one element of me as a person. I’ve come to the conclusion that we shouldn’t really care what other people think … it’s none of our business. Let them think what they like…it’s what we think that matters!
